Home Remedies To Treat Gum Pain And Toothache

Cold and Warm Compress

Take a clean cloth and soak it in warm water. Wring excess water from it and hold the same against your face on the affected area for about five minutes. The heat would improve circulation and boost blood flow to that area. Next step is to wrap an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas in a towel and hold it against the affected area for a couple of minutes. The cold will reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling.

Salt Water Rinse

Mix ½ tsp of salt with a glass of lukewarm water. Use the mixture to rinse your mouth thoroughly at least twice daily till the swelling or pain subsides.

Turmeric Paste

Mix ¼ tsp of turmeric powder with a small quantity of water to make a paste. Apply the same to the affected areas with a clean finger. Leave for five minutes and then massage gently for one minute before rinsing your mouth with warm water.

Apply Tea Bags

Dip a tea bag in boiling water for three minutes. Remove from the water and allow the tea bag to cool. Hold it on your gums and keep for five minutes. The tannic acid, as well as the anti-inflammatory benefits of tea, relieves gum discomfort and irritation quickly.

OTC Drugs

There are OTC drugs available for a toothache and gum pain as well. Get OTC drug benzocaine gel from the store and apply on the affected areas. Use tartar-control toothpaste if you have red and mildly swollen gums. You can use fluoride-based mouthwash as well. There are other non-prescription drugs available as well to treat fever or pain. These are Acetaminophen, such as Tylenol; Naproxen, such as Aleve or Naprosyn; Ibuprofen, such as Motrin or Advil.

Conclusion

If you do not get any relief using the home remedies or OTC drugs, visit a dentist to find out the reason causing the problem and get treated accordingly.
